Friends of the Hortense Miller Garden Annual Bulb Sale Dear Friends, It’s bulb time again—top size beautiful bulbs are available for everyone on your gift list. This year we have some new amaryllis to offer as well as old favorites. Remember, for only $5 extra we will pot up your bulbs with a nice moss covering so they are ready for gift giving. Thank you for supporting the Garden and remember to order early as we usually sell out every year. Paperwhites (Narcissus) This year we decided to order top size bulbs of improved Ziva paperwhites. The bulbs will bloom in four to six weeks after planting so you can plant some each week to extend your bloom period. The bulbs may be planted in a pot with soil, or grown in a dish or vase with water and pebbles.
Amaryllis The Amaryllis are in two categories, African and Brazilian. The African are the “Christmas blooming” type. They will bloom in four to six weeks from planting. The Brazilian bloom eight to twelve weeks from planting and could be called “Valentine’s Day” Amaryllis, as they will probably bloom in February or March. African or “Christmas Blooming” Amaryllis : Basuto We order Basuto every year—one of the fastest growing, biggest Amaryllis available. Basuto will bloom in about four weeks from planting. It is usually between 24” and 36” tall and has very large vibrant red flowers. This is a really nice gift for someone who thinks they can’t grow anything. It’s also just a beautiful flower for anyone at anytime. It will require a stake as it may get top heavy. Wedding Dance Wedding Dance is a white flower with a pale green throat. It is very simple and elegant. It also will need staking as it gets 36” to 40” tall. Alfresco Alfresco is the only selection in this group which is a miniature. It will grow about 10” to 16” tall. The flowers are about the size and shape of Amaryllis Belladonna, except they are double white and ruffled. It can put out four or five stems covered with blossoms. Cocktail Cocktail is a dusk red with a white starburst center and a pale green throat. It looks very Christmassy with the red and green together. Miracle This is the one for a true glowing Christmas red color and huge flower size. Flowers have a darker red throat.
Brazilian Amaryllis These are the ones that take eight to twelve weeks to bloom. Lemon and Lime We have our old favorite Lemon and Lime, which is a single, lovely pale green. Hortense has one that blooms twice a year like clockwork. We always get these unique and special flowering bulbs and they always sell out quickly. Exotica Exotica has a saucer shaped flower that is apricot and white with a darker apricot throat. Very large blooms and a very sophisticated color. This one bloomed at Christmas time for us, even though it is listed as a later bloomer. Floris Hecker Valentine’s Day beauty in pure velvety red. Very floriferous and with an exquisite form. Picotee Picotee is bright white with a vivid red edge. A favorite of many. San Remo New this year. San Remo is a lustrous marble white with deep raspberry flower petals on the top and paler raspberry petals on the bottom with a stunning green center.
